Bonito Boats

History of Bonito Boats

Originating from New Zealand in the early 1970s, the Bonito hull was designed by Frank Pellan to cross choppy bays and cross open water to go from island to island. The 4.8 meter long MK3 quickly proved to be an extremely capable little hull from which hundreds of boats were built.

The hull mold came to Australia in the 90s and once again proved its worth with commercial fishermen, mainly in south-east Queensland.

The demands of a small workboat were soon put to the test. After being purchased by Roger Barnes, the original mold was increased to 5 meters by adding half a capsule. This improved the already excellent performing hull.

In 2013, Martin Slennett joined Roger and Palamut 560 was created. New deck sills, casting platforms and numerous optional extras have been developed.

The Bonito 500 was also re-equipped to conform to the new standard. A program of continuous improvement has been in place ever since to keep Boats Bonito on the leading edge.
